OUGD401 - Study Task 7, Harvard Referencing & Triangulation

Each of the four manifesto agree upon what design stands for but each is worded differently. They all appreciate design but believe that what design was created for has been turned against itself and made into a sort of evil. Each express in different ways their sort of disgust of what design has been used for it’s almost to an old saying, with great power comes great responsibility. We as designers have a responsibility to use our skills in the right context and not just to sell people things they don’t need.

First things first both years talk about being told we need things through design and advertising. This piece uses sexuality, bold statements and money to sell you a greasy burger for a price that quite honestly is ridiculous. You could make the same thing at home or something much more substantial to our health for a fraction of the cost. It’s like car sales, using woman to sell cars, you don’t get the gorgeous lady with your purchase but for some reason it’s meant to persuade you to buy the product. The statement is telling you “IT’LL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY”, telling you this as in it is going to happen you have to try it and because it’s on a poster you believe it.
This all relates to a statement in ‘Fuck Committees’
“By now, virtually all media, architecture, product and graphic design have been freed from ideas, individual passion, and have been relegated to a role of corporate servitude, carrying out corporate strategies and increasing stock prices. “
