Critical Writing, Presentation - OUGD601

The focus point of the presentation was the question. With this in mind other questions had to be answered like why this topic and how would it be answered? The definition of the word 'Stereotype' was displayed to gain more insight into the topic and some examples were shown of ridiculous stereotyping to show why this is a topic that should be spoken about. Finally How it would be discussed and answered were listed at the end along with some research ideas.

The presentation didn't have many questions afterwards and staff were mostly happy with what had been discussed as I had already put some of the ideas across to them prior to presenting.

Critical Writing, Starting Points - OUGD601

For the basis of starting the essay a question has to be established. The initall question is "Why are Products Stereotyped?" meaning why are products aimed at certain people like why is pink used for women and blue for men etc. This would tie in to previous work I have done looking into things like stereotyping and equality. What this question also does is focus on aspects of graphic design I haven't touched on such as packaging.

After emailing my tutor I gained some helpful feedback on my initial ideas.

" I think your title is a little too simple at the moment. I don't think objects themselves can be stereotyped but stereotypes attributed to particular people can be used within the design and branding strategies of certain products. It is important to be as precise as possible when focussing your research.

Nonetheless, your focus is fine, just get cracking with reading - focus on branding and hone in on discussions that relate to stereotypes or differences between groups of people - class, gender, sex, age, etc. "

I will continue with my research into this topic and begin to bring together some academic support.
